Local Insights from a Sardinian

As a Sardinian who lives there, I advise you to absolutely avoid the period from the end of July to August 15th. In this period, the most famous and sought-after seaside resorts can be a hellish bedlam. I prefer to go on holiday in July, where it is still possible to enjoy space on the beach and not waste hours in the car in traffic to get there and go home. The choices are endless. Chia, Pula, Costarei, Villasimius, Orosei, S. Teodoro, Porto Rotondo, Palau, Arzachena, S. Teresa di Gallura, Alghero, Bosa, and many other places that are really well served and equipped with all the services for a fulfilling holiday. But there are also other off-the-beaten-path and still wild resorts with limited amenities which are my favorites.

For example, all the Costa Verde that goes from Gonnesa to under Oristano in the southwestern part of Sardinia is still mostly wild and relatively little traveled. Reaching these locations is in itself a nice adventurous journey immersed in unspoilt nature. The beaches of Scivu, Piscinas, with its desert dunes that extend for 3 km inland that seems to be in Morocco, Torre dei Corsari are something unique, and in the middle of August, the distance between you and other people can be even of 300 meters. Be careful, however, the sea here can be dangerous because it is immediately deep, and if it is rough, for the less experienced, it is better not to enter. The undertow can be very dangerous. Also, between Chia and Teulada, there are countless enchanting coves along the road that are little traveled and little frequented, as well as in the southeastern sector between Costarei and Villaputzu with the enormous beaches of Feraxi, Colostrai, and S. Giovanni which are easily accessible with shallow water and almost always calm, little frequented. It depends on what you are looking for: comfort and services or adventure and wilderness. Everything is there. But if you want to save money, avoid the period from the end of July to 15th August.
