The IRA and Its Actions: A Critical Analysis

When discussing the ideology and actions of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), it is important to balance historical context with a critical evaluation of methods and outcomes.

Context and Ideological Goals

Some argue that the IRA's ideological goals were reasonable when compared to other extremist groups like Al Qaeda and ISIS. Their aim was to achieve a united Ireland, free from British rule. However, despite these noble objectives, the methods employed by the IRA unintentionally hardened the partition of Ireland and caused significant suffering.

Moderation and the Good Friday Agreement

The Good Friday Agreement marked a significant milestone in the peace process. While it allowed murderers to gain immunity from their crimes, it ultimately brought a semblance of peace to Northern Ireland (N.I.) and the Republic of Ireland (R.O.I.). The agreement was a crucial step towards reconciliation and understanding. However, it was not without its criticisms and complexities.

Problems with IRA Tactics

Although some attribute the IRA's success to their ability to force negotiations, others, including myself, argue that their actions were necessary but ultimately had to be stopped. The Black Tuesday of 1992, where two judges were murdered, stands as a stark reminder of the IRA's disregard for human life. This action demonstrated a willingness to use violence regardless of the cost.

Personal Reflection and Perspective

While it is understandable to have a degree of sympathy for a united Ireland, the IRA's methods were unjustifiable. The use of violence to achieve political objectives is inherently flawed. Bombing and shooting people never worked as a long-term strategy. It led to an increased divide rather than unity.

Conclusion: Choices and Consequences

It is important to recognize that every individual has choices. Whether it be a life of crime or a life on the straight path, there is always an option available, unless it is a case of dying. Just as people had a choice to be Calogero or Lanzella, those involved in the IRA had a choice to volunteer or not. The actions of the IRA cannot be justified by any means.

The example of 9/11 can further illustrate this point. Just as those who lost loved ones on that day had a choice to participate in vigilante justice or seek justice through other means, the IRA's actions were a choice to use violence without regard for the consequences.

Final Thoughts on Republican Tactics

The Republicans have shifted their tactics, and it is possible that these changes may lead to the achievement of their goals. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that such methods are not the path to peace and unity. The path to a peaceful and united Ireland must be one of dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect.
