My journey to Las Vegas, Nevada, began in 1969 when I graduated from high school at the age of 17. I was eager to attend Nevada Southern University, which later changed its name to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Back then, one of the main factors that pushed me to make this move was the lack of humidity and the dry air, a stark contrast to the more humid climate in California. One thing I did miss was the Pacific Ocean, but it wasn't too far away, just a scenic drive away.

After graduating from San Diego Military Academy in Solana Beach, California, I made my way to Las Vegas to attend the university. The lifestyle and opportunities were significantly different from what I was used to. My father was already residing in Las Vegas, which helped me secure resident student status, a crucial aspect for my success in the city.

Challenges and Opportunities

The early 1970s were a unique period for the hotel industry in Las Vegas. Wages were comparatively low, with me earning just $4.50 an hour at the Frontier Hotel as a registration clerk. However, the city's strong union influence eventually led to significant wage hikes. Upon retirement, my wages had nearly doubled, reaching a generous $20 an hour, along with comprehensive benefits including healthcare, vacation, and pay.

One of my most striking experiences during my early days in the hotel industry was the variety of responsibilities I undertook. From registration and cashier roles to being a PBX operator (also known as a switchboard operator) and a security auditor for knives, the work kept me busy and challenged me in various ways. By the time I left Spokane, Washington, for Las Vegas, I had multiple responsibilities behind the desk, reflecting the dynamic and fast-paced nature of the hospitality industry.

Personal Experiences and Social Life

My social life in Las Vegas was also enriched by the city's vibrant and luxurious offerings. My introduction to the hotel industry was serendipitous, with the first two girls I met at the Stardust hotel-casino-resort being coffee girls. Interestingly, I was known as the only coffee boy in the coffee shop. The girls were connected to influential figures, including Kathys' grandpa and Shannon, a notable entertainer and city councilman. As a result, I enjoyed frequent free meals, drinks, and entertainment from these establishments.

On a personal front, I purchased my first house at the age of 22, an achievement that would have been more challenging in a more expensive market like San Diego. The flexibility and opportunities in Las Vegas allowed me to build a life that combined professional growth with personal stability and satisfaction.
