When considering where to live in the Hutt Valley, I find it more appealing than neighboring cities like Wellington, Porirua, and Kapiti. While Lower Hutt does not offer the same level of highlights as Upper Hutt, it compensates with a warmer climate overall and a thriving shopping mall. Lower Hutt, in particular, is a paradise for dog owners: every park reserve and track allows dogs off-leash, and a substantial number of restaurants, cafes, and bars welcome four-legged friends.

Rents here are quite high, ranging from $600 per week, and the only mall, Queensgate Mall, now charges for parking. Another mall that does this is Frankston, Victoria, which is a run-down and undesirable location.

Lower Hutt, being larger, offers a more moderate climate. The Queensgate Mall in Lower Hutt is much bigger and has more stores, but it can be quite crowded. Rents in Lower Hutt range from around $400 per week, depending on the neighborhood. However, certain railway belt suburbs like Pomare, Taita, Moera, Waiwhetu, and parts of Stokes Valley should be avoided due to safety concerns. Wainui, another suburb, is okay but may have dodgy areas.
