Best Inexpensive Places to Stay at Walt Disney World for a Family

Planning a trip to Walt Disney World with a family requires careful consideration, especially when it comes to accommodations. While you may be looking for the most economical options, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons of different accommodations. In this comprehensive guide, we provide valuable insights into the best budget-friendly staying options at Walt Disney World.

On-Property Options

When it comes to staying on the Walt Disney World property, there are several resorts to consider, with varying room types and capacities. The All Star Resort Music, Movies, and Sports is the most economical on-property option, with rooms typically available for up to four occupants. However, with a family of five, you'll likely need to opt for an intermediate resort. Two excellent choices are the Port Orleans and Caribbean Beach. Central reservations is the best way to secure the best rates, as you may even find a Vacation Club property with a vacancy. Additionally, staying in a Vacation Club property can be a great option, as the 'owner' might have opted for a cruise instead of a hotel stay.

Inside Property Options

For a more value-driven option within the Walt Disney World property, the Art of Animation Resort and Pop Century Resort are highly recommended. These resorts offer excellent theming for kids and have ample pools. The new Skyliner transit system has made these resorts even more appealing, as guests can now access Hollywood Studios and Epcot more conveniently.

While family suites can be an option at places like Art of Animation or Pop Century, they can sometimes be limited or more expensive. Moderates such as Port Orleans and Caribbean Beach offer rooms with a fold-out bed for a fifth person, which can be a more economical choice. Rooms with two double beds are also available, and the current cheapest rate is around $110 per night.

Off-Property Options

There are numerous hotels and motels just outside the main gate, with rates starting as low as $35. These off-property options offer a significant cost-saving benefit and are conveniently located within easy driving distance of Walt Disney World.

Camping is another budget-friendly option, with spots in the campground available for around $55 per night. While the perks of staying within the Walt Disney World property are attractive, they come with their own drawbacks. For instance, Disney transportation can be inconvenient, limiting your options and taking more time to get around the parks. Additionally, 'extended hours' are often not worth it, given that most can only handle a full day's worth of activities.

Comparing Staying Options

The best value resorts are Art of Animation and Pop Century. These resorts are typically cheaper than moderate resorts and have excellent theming for kids, including large, inviting pools. As a family, we've stayed at Art of Animation Resort for the last two trips, and the kids still talk about how much they loved it and how they want to go back.

When comparing staying options, you need to factor in additional costs such as a rental car and parking. Adding around $50 for a rental car and parking can make staying outside the park a more cost-effective option. With a rental car, you have the flexibility to explore other attractions in and around the area, and you can also experience different parts of the resort without the constraints of Disney transportation.

While dining can be slightly cheaper outside of Walt Disney World, the overall cost of dining within the theme park can still add up. Many off-property hotels offer an on-site dining option, which can be a cheaper alternative.

Considering all factors, it is often more cost-effective to stay outside the park, especially if you have a large family. This option also provides more flexibility and fewer constraints, allowing you to enjoy the entire Florida experience beyond just Walt Disney World.
