Traveling can be a thrilling adventure, but sometimes the experience can be so underwhelming or even dangerous that you never want to return. Whether it is due to personal reasons or the general atmosphere of the place, there are certain destinations that have left a lasting impression in a negative way and made it clear that I won't be revisiting them.

Experiences That Made Me Decide to Stay Away

Benalmadena, Perú, Barcelona, London, Melbourne, Jamaica, Haiti, South Africa, and Brazil are just a few of the places that fall into this category. Here’s a closer look at my experiences and why these destinations have become off limits for me.

Benalmadena, Spain

Benalmadena has a reputation for being a tourist hotspot, but as someone who enjoys a bit of excitement and adventure, the place has left a sour taste in my mouth. I found the city to be rather dull and uninteresting, which is a stark contrast to the lively and vibrant atmosphere I usually seek out. This experience has taught me to avoid places that fail to meet my expectations and keep me engaged.

Peru, Barcelona, London, and Melbourne

My experiences in these cities were somewhat mixed, but for different reasons. Peru was a unique destination before the political unrest in 2016, but it has since seen improvements. However, my recent trips to Barcelona were not as enjoyable as previous visits. The city has started to feel too commercial and lacks the charm it once had. Similarly, London can be overwhelming due to the prevalence of tourists and the excessive amounts of wealth on display. As for Melbourne, my hopes for it to become “a digital city at the world’s end” were unrealistic and left me feeling disillusioned.

Jamaica

My time in Jamaica stands out for a different reason. During my visit, I was nearly kidnapped. This incident significantly impacted my perception of the country and made me feel that it is not a place I want to return to, at least until I can ensure my safety.

Haiti, South Africa, and Brazil

I also encountered some challenging situations in other parts of the world. In Haiti, I was detained by the State Department, which was a stressful and unsettling experience. Similarly, while visiting South Africa, I felt the need to avoid certain areas due to safety concerns. A trip to Brazil was cut short when I was held back by the same department, and it reinforced my desire to stay away from politically unstable regions.

Kuwait City

One of the more formal and strict destinations I encountered was Kuwait City. This place was an assignment for the military that required me to travel alone, and for 5 days, it was impossible to enjoy the city because of its extreme heat, the lack of alcohol, and the religious and cultural restrictions. Being detained during Ramadan further complicated matters, and the experience was so negative that I now regard the city with a great deal of apprehension.

New York City: A Bittersweet Reminder

Although New York City holds a special place in my heart because of my strong connections to family and friends, a visit there made me realize how it can be overwhelming. The city's constant hustle and bustle can be exhausting, and the intense focus on wealth may not align with my values. Despite this, I still plan to visit the city to see my loved ones but understand that it might not be the most enjoyable destination for me.
