Why I Chose Tucson: A Journey of Belonging and Comfort

I was fortunate enough to call Tucson, Arizona, my home for the past several years, and the choice feels as though it was predestined. Given the proximity of my father, the vibrant community I found there, and the natural beauty around me, it's no wonder I've embraced the Arizona landscape and community with such open arms. This article shares my journey and the reasons I've chosen to call Tucson my home.

Family and Friendship

Deciding to move to Tucson was a matter of staying close to my father during the last years of his life. In a span of 7 and a half years, I had the joy of spending the twilight of my father’s existence with him, which is a rare and precious experience. Growing up, my father was stationed in the Air Force, and we had to live with our grandparents. When he was deployed, it was clear that we needed to be with family to support each other. This move brought me closer to my sister, ensuring a much-needed connection during challenging times.

A Welcoming and Vibrant Community

Tucson is a city that offers an abundance of living benefits. It is affordable, with a climate that is delightful, thanks to its vibrant restaurant scene and community. The natural beauty of the area is unparalleled, with mountains, deserts, and green landscapes providing endless opportunities for outdoor activities. The friendly and warm community around me added to my decision to stay in Tucson. This is a place where you can experience a strong sense of belonging and friendship.

Outdoor Activities and Leisure

For those who love adventure, Tucson does not disappoint. There are numerous hiking trails available that cater to various levels of fitness, from casual strolls to challenging ascents up the mountains. Golf is another passion for many, and there are a plethora of golf courses ranging from beginner-friendly to championship-worthy. The airport may be small but is good for domestic flights, with international connections available in Phoenix. My personal challenge to leave Tucson had many reasons, starting with family/friends, comfort, and the weather. In the summer, Tucson can get up to 111°F, but it's manageable compared to other desert cities.

Personal Milestone in Tucson

I got married in Tucson at Aqua Caliente Park, which provided a scenic and memorable backdrop for our special day. The park offers beautiful settings for weddings and gatherings, making it a popular choice for many couples in the area. The weather in Tucson is particularly favorable for outdoor activities in the fall and spring, making it a great time to explore the city and its surroundings.

Idle Moments and Cultural Enrichment

In addition to outdoor adventures, there are plenty of indoor entertainment options to keep visitors and residents engaged, such as numerous museums, casino shows, and cultural events. There are diverse events like Dillinger Days in February and Rodeo Days in May, where you can experience a taste of the old west. The Titan Missile Museum and Kartchner Caverns are nearby attractions, offering unique and educational experiences. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Pima Community College provide access to learning and cultural enrichment. Additionally, visiting Tombstone on Helldorado Days transports you back in time to a bygone era.

Daily Life and Outdoor Thrills

Living in Tucson means frequent outings on two wheels, with an abundance of bicycle paths. Public transportation is also available, with a few free shuttles adding to the convenience. The dry desert air is particularly good for those with respiratory conditions, such as my arthritis. The proximity of the desert, with its stunning sunsets and clear starry nights, is a reminder of the raw beauty of nature.

Community Safety and Legal Considerations

Socially, Tucson is a safe place compared to other parts of the U.S., with no riots like those seen in Oregon. The open carry of firearms, while legal, is still uncommon, and the presence of openly carrying individuals in places like McDonald's discourages potential criminals. The legal possession of firearms in Marana is also permitted, including certain machine guns, which I have personally experienced.

Concluding Thoughts

Ultimately, Tucson provides a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and a supportive community. Whether you're into hiking, golfing, exploring history, or simply enjoying the desert life, Tucson offers something for everyone. The area's affordability and warm climate made it a natural and comfortable choice for me to call it home for the long term.
