Why Did I Leave the Hotel Industry?

As a result of career guidance from my mentor, Sneha Grover, I have successfully transitioned my career from marketing to the technical domain. This move required a high degree of alertness, as my career decision could have either positively or negatively impacted my life. Sneha's mentorship program provided me with continuous support to progress in the right direction, ensuring I made the most out of this transition.

Reasons for Leaving the Hospitality Industry

I decided to leave the hospitality industry to become a full-time college-level Hospitality Management instructor. This decision was not without its challenges, as I left behind a steady paycheck from two different companies, and another turned out to be less than ideal. The primary reason for this transition was the desire for better work hours and the opportunity to focus on teaching.

Teaching provides a unique set of rewards, including the possibility of influencing young minds and making a significant impact in the field of hospitality. However, the hospitality industry, which encompasses roles such as servers, clerks, and managers, is inherently demanding. Guests expect to be served and pampered from the moment they arrive until they leave, necessitating a consistent attitude of readiness to serve, politeness, and friendliness.

Turnover in the Hospitality Industry

In the hospitality industry, turnover rates can be high, a phenomenon that is not surprising considering the high expectations guests have and the demanding nature of the jobs. While it is possible to make a very good living in this field, it typically requires a lifelong commitment. This is particularly true before the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly altered the industry landscape.

I left the hospitality industry because I found it increasingly challenging to cope with the demands of the job. Initially, I joined a hotel management program with the intention of learning culinary skills. Unfortunately, a lack of knowledge and understanding led me to a point of failure. This experience taught me the importance of gaining sufficient knowledge before embarking on a new career path. It was a critical lesson that led me to consider a more stable and fulfilling profession, such as teaching.

From Hospitality to Teaching: A New Chapter

The transition from the hospitality industry to a teaching profession has brought with it a fresh perspective and new set of challenges. As a college-level instructor, I now have the opportunity to impart knowledge and guide the next generation of hospitality professionals. This new role not only offers more stable working hours but also the chance to contribute to the growth and development of the field.

In conclusion, the decision to leave the hospitality industry and transition into teaching was a significant career change. It was driven by the need for better work-life balance and the desire to teach Hospitality Management. This journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering new opportunities and a fresh outlook on the future of this dynamic industry.
