Voyager 1 and Voyager 2: A Comparison in Lifespan

Each Voyager probe has faced different challenges and has operated for distinct periods. Voyager 1, launched on September 5, 1977, was initially designed to last for five years but continues to operate over four decades later. It is anticipated to keep functioning for another 10 to 20 years before its power runs out. The farthest manmade object from Earth, Voyager 1 is exploring the heliopause—the boundary between our solar system and interstellar space.

Voyager 2, launched in August 1977, also transitioned through a series of operational phases. Key milestones include the shutdown of the scan platform and UVS observations in 1998, followed by the termination of the Digital Tape Recorder (DTR) operations in 2007 due to a failure on the High Waveform Receiver. By 2016, the Planetary Radio Astronomy Experiment (PRA) also ceased operations, and by 2020, the spacecraft initiated instrument power sharing. It is highly unlikely that any significant structural change will occur that would lead to the probes failing by themselves.
