Solo Female Travel in Hostels: Tips and Stories
Solo Female Travel in Hostels: Tips and Stories
Solo travel is an exhilarating experience, especially for women who have the freedom to explore the world at their own pace. One popular accommodation option for solo travelers is hostels, which offer the opportunity to meet new people and have unique experiences. Here, I share my experiences and tips for solo female travelers, particularly those who are introverted, on staying in hostels.
My Experiences in Hostels
I’ve had numerous solo travels across various regions, including the UK/Europe, Middle East, and Africa, and have always chosen to stay in hostels. Staying in a hostel is like a mini-town for solo travelers; it guarantees a chance to not just save money but also to forge new friendships and have memorable experiences.
During one trip to North Africa, I found myself in a hostel with three Austrian men. Though I didn’t know them well, their friendly demeanor made them appealing companions. They offered me a seat in their car, and I decided to accept, jumping into an impromptu adventure. This experience not only expanded my travel route but also introduced me to lifelong friends. Later, I encountered them again in Portugal, and even visited Austria to celebrate one of their birthdays. These incidental introductions highlight the serendipitous nature of staying in hostels.
Addressing Concerns with Bunkjet
Concerns about encountering unsuitable companions in a hostel are valid. However, a new platform called Bunkjet is launching in Summer 2017 and provides basic information about potential roommates. This feature can help travelers make more informed decisions, ensuring a comfortable stay despite the potential for sharing a room with strangers. For instance, a 27-year-old woman might prefer a 6-bed mixed dorm with an average age of mid to late 20s over an 8-bed dorm mostly occupied by 18-year-old boys.
Tips for Introverted Solo Travelers
If you are more introverted, meeting new people can be daunting. However, hostels often provide a safe environment for introverts to bond. You can participate in social activities or simply strike up conversations with fellow travelers. As you become more comfortable, it gets easier to enjoy the social aspect of travel.
When sharing a room with strangers, it’s crucial to respect each other’s personal space and possessions. A smaller dormitory, such as a 4-bed room, can offer more privacy, making it easier to navigate the social aspects of hostel life without feeling overwhelmed. The general rule of thumb is to be considerate and treat others the way you would like to be treated in similar situations.
Conclusion and Wishes
Staying in hostels as a solo female traveler offers a unique blend of independence and community. Whether you are social or introverted, hostels can provide the perfect balance of social experiences and personal space. Safe travels and many exciting adventures ahead!
