Preparing for the Selvaggio Blu Trek in Sardinia: Past and Present

Regrettably, I embarked on this trek 30 years ago, and while many facets have undergone transformation, some fundamental elements remain unchanged. One of the significant challenges is finding natural, drinkable water, especially during the dry season. Back then, we wisely packed all the necessary water and left some in the shepherds' 'pinnette,' traditional shelters made of juniper wood. We even stumbled upon water and food left by fellow trekkers or shepherds.

Today's Changes and Regulations

Today, sleeping in pinnette and lighting campfires without permission is no longer permitted. According to the stories and personal advice, you must now report your plan and itinerary and potentially hire a guide, though the specifics may vary. If you're planning to stay in a grotto, be cautious as they may be used as animal shelters, and you might encounter fleas.

Timing and Weather Considerations

The best time to embark on this adventure is during April, October, and even in May, avoiding the peak summer months, which can be unbearably hot, necessitating more water. Rain can complicate your journey; expect it between October and December and March and April. In January, temperatures can drop drastically, especially under clear skies, with nighttime temperatures as low as -4 to -6 Celsius. However, on sunny days, the heat can be intense during the afternoon, so be prepared for significant temperature fluctuations.

Physical Preparation and Equipment

Walking on the sharp limestone can be a challenge, particularly in areas known as 'fields of knives,' where the terrain can be unforgiving. It is crucial to wear boots that protect against sharp stones. I often preferred 'old-style' boots with sewn rubber soles over modern glued soles for better protection. Ensure your footgear is sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of the trek.

Wildlife Encounters and Safety

When it comes to wildlife, pigs, particularly those that are half-wild, can be particularly troublesome. Refrain from feeding them at all costs, as it can lead to dangerous and frustrating situations. In the past, we faced occasional theft of cars left unattended, with the contents completely ransacked. Animals, especially pigs, had been known to empty fuel tanks or damage vehicles, so it's essential to secure all valuables and never leave your car unattended.

Conclusion

While the natural landscape of Sardinia has remained much the same as it was in the late 20th century, the human and animal environment has certainly evolved. Keep these tips in mind, and you'll be well-prepared for this transformative trek.
