Introduction
Neighborhoods can be a source of immense joy and warmth, especially when you have great neighbors. My family lived in Saratoga, California from 1962 to 1971, where my childhood friend and neighbor, Clarence Asplundh, and his wife Ruth, had a significant impact on my life.

The Asplundh Family: A Pillar of Strength

Clarence and Ruth Asplundh were not just neighbors; they were like extended family to us. Clarence was a large, jovial, and friendly man, always ready with a kind word and a hearty laugh. Ruth was equally sweet, and their house, which was a small cottage unlike any other in our neighborhood, was a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality. Our family lived on a busy road (Highway 9), but dad had built a lovely fence around the property, providing a sense of seclusion and comfort.

Childhood Memories and Neighborhood Bonds

As a young boy, I spent a lot of time in our neighborhood, and my friendships with my friends sometimes involved wit and playfulness, but never anything serious enough to be considered bullying. Whenever I rode my bike or just ran around, I would often stop by to chat with Clarence or Ruth. These interactions were precious, as they provided me with a sense of security and support during my formative years.

Unforgettable Conversations and Support

Our conversations ranged from sports to politics, but chess was our shared passion. I often shared my thoughts and feelings with them and appreciated their thoughtful listening. I still remember the conversations about the RFK for President campaign, especially during the 1968 California Primary. Clarence provided me with much-needed comfort after the tragic death of Bobby Kennedy in 1968, which deeply affected me emotionally and politically. His kindness and empathy were a balm to my soul.

Emotional Lasting Impact

The Asplundh family was not just a source of joyful memories but also a comfort during challenging times. I often felt like a son to them, even though they had no children of their own. These emotional bonds endured long after we moved away, and their influence remains a cherished part of my life. It is with deep respect and gratitude that I remember them in my thoughts and prayers, hoping to convey the warmth and affection they bestowed upon me. Rest in peace, Clarence and Ruth, you will always hold a special place in my heart.

Neighborhood friendships like these are rare and precious. They help shape young minds and hearts, providing a sense of belonging and support. The Asplundh family's kindness and warmth continue to inspire me, illustrating the profound impact that good neighbors can have on one's life.
