Navigating the Swiss Alps: Travel Itinerary Between Lucerne and Interlaken

Direct Train Route from Lucerne to Interlaken

The most straightforward and scenic route from Lucerne to Interlaken is by train. The Zentralbahn operates a direct train service over the Brünig pass, offering a scenic and swift journey.

Take the direct Zentralbahn train from Lucerne to Interlaken Ost (East) Station. The journey typically takes approximately 1 hour and 49 minutes, with a fare of CHF 33.

Note that Interlaken has two main railway stations: Interlaken Ost (East Station) and Interlaken West Station. If your final destination is Grindelwald or the Jungfrau region, it is advisable to depart from Interlaken Ost Station, as this station connects to routes further into the mountains.

Alternative Routes

While the direct route is highly recommended for convenience and time efficiency, there are alternative options that provide more scenic or different experiences. Here are a few alternate routes:

Route via Giswil and Engelberg

For a less intensive journey, you can take a train from Lucerne that stops at Giswil, where the railway changes to a rack section. Alternatively, some routes may continue to Engelberg before reaching Interlaken. This route offers a slightly longer journey but provides different views and experiences.

Route via Bern

A less scenic but potentially time-saving option is to take an SBB train from Lucerne to Bern, then continue to Interlaken via Spiez. This route involves a change of trains but can be more convenient for busy travelers.

Extended Itinerary: A Full Day’s Journey

For a more adventurous and comprehensive experience, consider taking a full day for a more extended journey. This can include visiting additional destinations that you might not have time for in a shorter trip. Here is a suggested itinerary:

Start from Lucerne and take a train to Spiez. Change to the BLS Lotschberg line to Visp and Brig. From Brig, board the MGB line to Andermatt, and then continue to Goschenen. At Goschenen, you will need to change to the Gotthard route. Most services now use the Gotthard Base Tunnel, but this also offers an interesting route. Further on, you can change trains at Lucerne, though additional changes might be required depending on your final destination.

While this route can be complex, it offers a unique and panoramic experience through the Swiss Alps, including the famous Glacier Express from Andermatt to Brig.

Drive or Take the Train?
