My Special Pier: A Canine Retreat in Hawaii

Nestled on the tropical island of Oahu, Hawaii, lies a quiet corner at the marina in Kō liaison. Most known for its rich marine ecosystem and bustling industrial harbor, this place has a hidden gem that held a special place in our hearts and our dog's.

While the strip dividing the marina from the industrial harbor may not be a traditional pier, it's what we've fondly come to call our 'dog's paradise'.

A Rocky and Barren Barrier

The strip itself is not the most picturesque. It is a rocky, barren stretch filled with kiawe trees with long, sharp spikes. For some, this might not seem inviting, but to our beloved pup, it was an escape from the chaos of his daily life.

A Dog's Haven

What makes this strip so special is that it was our dog's favorite spot. He didn't always get along well with other dogs, but here he could run and chase balls without any conflict. He could freely roam around, sniffing out the spots where fishermen had used their boats and sometimes finding intriguing remainders of nature's ecosystem.

He especially loved chasing after the feral cats that roamed the area. It was a daily ritual for him, a game of hide and seek that played out in those seemingly barren rocks and trees.

From a Playful Pup to a Senior Mile

Life is unpredictable, and our dog's health journey was no different. As he aged, his hips began to deteriorate, making it difficult for him to walk. Eventually, he needed a wheelchair to maintain his mobility. This change was tough for both of us, but our spot remained a sanctuary for him.

Up until his hips made it nearly impossible for him to walk, this strip was his permanent spot. He would lie in the sun, take in the fresh sea breeze, and look out at the horizon as if he was eavesdropping on the secrets of the ocean. Those were some of his happiest moments, and it was a place where he felt truly free and at peace.

Forever Remembered

The strip will forever be a part of our memories in Kō liaison. For our dog, those rocks and kiawe trees held more than just the promise of a fun day. They were safe, familiar, and filled with adventure. Even now, as he has passed, the strip and its memories will remain a cherished part of our journey.
