Meditating on a Family Vacation: Simple Strategies for A Mindful Break

Going on family vacations is a wonderful way to bond and create lasting memories, but it can also present unique challenges. Amid the noise and activity of travel, finding the space to meditate can seem like an impossible task. However, with a little creativity and thoughtfulness, you can incorporate meditation into your family vacation routine in a variety of ways.

Early Morning and Nighttime Retreats

One of my favorite meditation times during vacations is waking up before sunrise when everyone else is still asleep. The calm and quiet of the early morning can be incredibly grounding. And when the night has fallen and the quiet sets in, you can retreat to the balcony to meditate under a sea of stars. These moments can be truly glorious, offering a respite from the usual chaos and a chance to connect with the natural world in a meaningful way.

Walking Meditation

If you can't manage a full meditation session, even a short walk can be a powerful form of mindfulness. Whether you're near the sea, a forest, or a city park, simply going for a walk can be a form of meditation. By focusing on your steps, the breath, and the environment around you, you can bring a meditative awareness to your walk. Here’s an excellent article on how to walk with intention and pay attention to simple details you might have overlooked before:

Quiet Time and Naps

Another option is to take advantage of quiet time during the day. If the family is at the pool or playing, you can sneak away for a short "nap" to find some much-needed quiet. Evening is another prime time to meditate, especially when the kids are watching movies or playing games. Even a few minutes of quiet time can make a significant difference in your overall relaxation and well-being.

The Art of Meditating on a Headphone

For those who prefer a guided approach, using headphones can be incredibly helpful. You can find meditation music or guided meditations that can help you focus and relax. One of my favorite apps is Insight Timer, which offers a vast library of guided meditations. The free version has been invaluable for me, and it can be a great way to start or end your day on a calming note.

Exploration, Experimentation, and Experience

The key to incorporating meditation into a family vacation is to be open to new experiences and willing to experiment. Different techniques and times of day might work better for you, so it's important to try out different methods and see what resonates. Mindfulness is all about finding what works for you, so embrace the journey and make the most of your vacation.

First of all, I love you.
Hi Iris. I hope you are well.

Teja answered your question well. I’d like to make it a little bit more practical for you.
While on vacation, pick only one specific thing that you would like to watch. For example, if you are a worrier, then watch for the moments where you are beginning to create expectation. Make a plan if you like, but with no expectation whatsoever that it will happen that way. When you are catching yourself saying “We HAVE TO go swimming…” just take a breath and investigate that.
