Markus' Epic Motorbike Journey: Racing Against the Clock Around the Globe

Step into the adventure of Markus, a German motorcyclist who took on the challenge of circumnavigating the world on three classic 2-stroke scooters in just 80 days. This story is not just about the physical journey but also about the mental fortitude and resilience required to face every challenge along the way.

Challenges of the Journey

Markus embarked on this ambitious journey driven by a passion for adventure and the desire to push the limits of endurance. His three scooters, each with a power of 7-14hp and capacity of 125-177cc, were chosen to save on costs, reduce complications during shipping, and ensure smooth travel. Prior to his grand adventure, he completed a 10,000 km solo ride across the United States to prepare.

Centuries-Old Adventure in the Modern World

Adapting to life on the road, Markus faced a myriad of challenges. From riding through extreme temperatures (up to 46°C to a bone-chilling -3°C), battleground-like conditions such as flooding, sandstorms, and construction sites, to the unpredictable nature of border crossings and police checks, his journey was a relentless test. Health issues, including diarrhea, colds, stomach illnesses, and even injuries from accidents, added to the list of obstacles overcome.

The Long Road and the Obstacles

During his 773 days of travel, covering a grand total of 27,113 kilometers, Markus encountered numerous breakdowns. He faced significant delays in Turkey when he had to wait 6 days for parts and even more unexpectedly waited 5-7 days in the port of Baku due to no timetable for the ferry. Such unpredictability and the challenges of riding under all types of weather conditions serve as a testament to the complexity and bravery required to undertake such an endeavor.

Endurance and Resolution

Markus' journey is a true test of endurance. His average daily distance was 399 km, with 690 km covered on the longest day. This commitment to riding, even in difficult conditions, reflects his dedication and the commitment to his goal. Despite the lengthy list of failures, injuries, and breakdowns, he managed to complete his journey as he had planned, finishing in Spain instead of at the end of day 76, following in the footsteps of Jules Verne's classic novel.

The Economic and Emotional Impact

The total cost of the journey was around €25,000, inclusive of all expenses and preparation, including the coast-to-coast ride in the US. While the journey brought immense memories and experiences, the financial aspect was a significant consideration. Despite not being rich at the outset, Markus emphasized the value of the experiences and the memories that this adventure created. His journey is as much about the people he met and the places he saw as it is about the distance traveled.

A Call to Adventure

For those contemplating a similar journey or simply inspired by the boundless spirit of adventure, Markus' journey is a rendezvous with travel filled with memories and challenges. The spirit of adventure, whether it be a solo trip or a group adventure, invites a life full of unpredictability and endless discovery. As Markus' journey has shown, the true reward lies in the journey itself, not just the destination.
