Is Topeka, Kansas Truly a Dangerous City?

As a single Black woman living in Topeka, Kansas, my experiences here have made it a city where safety concerns are a significant part of daily life. I have faced various forms of violence, including assault, stalking, and even being drugged. These incidents have occurred with individuals I did not know, such as strangers, neighbors, and coworkers. However, the city is not uniformly as dangerous as one might think, especially when compared to larger urban centers.

Personal Experiences of Violence and Crime

Over the years, I have had numerous experiences that have left me questioning the safety of the city. For example, I have been assaulted, stalked, and drugged on multiple occasions. These incidents have not been limited to intimate encounters; they have occurred with individuals whom I was not dating. Moreover, sexual harassment is a prevalent issue in Topeka, and the likelihood of it happening is quite high.

On a more serious note, property crimes have also been a part of my experience. One instance includes the shattering of my car windows, which was a relatively tame incident compared to other crimes I have encountered, such as car thefts, burglaries, and more violent encounters.

A noteworthy encounter involved a man following me around a laundromat, insisting I give him a ride despite my repeated denials. I found myself in a precarious situation, and my only option was to hide in the bathroom until the police arrived. Such incidents highlight the dangers that lurk within everyday scenarios.

Crime Trends and Community Safety

While Topeka is certainly not immune to criminal activities, it does not necessarily warrant the label of a dangerous city when compared to larger metropolitan areas. There are specific areas to avoid, and common sense goes a long way in mitigating risks. For instance, gang activity is more prevalent, especially in certain neighborhoods, and the city advises against wandering at night in these areas.

A particularly chilling incident involved a 15-year-old girl who violently assaulted a 9-year-old girl, resulting in hospitalization. She then attempted to use social media to threaten those who might report her actions. In another instance, two botched robbery attempts, including an armed robbery with a knife, a stabbing, a shooting that made state news, and multiple shootings, brawls, and incidents occurred within a two-year period at a convenience store. These are stark reminders of the hidden dangers that can be present even in a seemingly ordinary setting.

Mayor's Perspective on Safety

As a 30-year elevator and escalator mechanic who has worked extensively in and around Topeka, I also have some insights. In 1992, I installed two new elevators at Topeka High School during a summer break. Later, I was involved in a trouble call on the passenger elevator where I found bullet damage to the car operating panel, likely the work of someone using a handgun. This incident speaks to the necessity of maintaining vigilant oversight and security in public spaces.

Despite the presence of these challenges, it is important to approach Topeka with a balanced perspective. Implementing common-sense safety measures, avoiding certain areas at night, and staying informed about the neighborhood one lives in can significantly reduce the risk of encountering such incidents. As with any city, there are areas and moments of risk, but with awareness and precaution, it is possible to lead a relatively safe life in Topeka, Kansas.
