When we hear the name Kolkata, several images come to mind, starting with the remarkable and striking Howrah Bridge. This iconic landmark plays a vital role in the city's transportation and has become a symbol of Kolkata. The bridge, seen from the Howrah Railway Station, offers a breathtaking view. Adjacent to the bridge, the Vijayanagar Setu (Vidyasagar Setu) further enhances the city's skyline.

Reflections from a Kolkatan

I spent five years in Kolkata, from 1994 to 1999, during my father's transfer to the city. Prior to this, I had lived my entire life in Maharashtra. I resided in Salt Lake City and studied at Jaipuria College, where tuition fees were as low as 6 INR per month. Here are some reflections on Kolkata based on my personal experience:

Likes

Low cost of living: The affordability of daily living in Kolkata was one of the major positives during my time there. Free education: Access to almost free education was an advantage that many students appreciated. Cheap transport: The accessibility and affordability of transportation were commendable. Literature and Music: The rich literary and musical heritage, especially the music composed between 1960 and 1980, was highly celebrated.

Dislikes

Hostile weather and polluted vehicles: The extreme weather conditions and the use of polluting vehicles like Ambassador cars were frustrating. Lack of employment opportunities: Job prospects were limited during my time in Kolkata. Poor leadership and patriarchal set-up: Poor governance and a traditional societal structure were challenging. Hostility towards outsiders: The resistance from locals towards outsiders was a significant aspect of my experience. Resistance to change: The city's resistance to change, especially in terms of infrastructure and social norms, posed challenges. Waste of time in arm-chair politics: The excessive focus on politics and debates without tangible action was frustrating.

It has been 21 years since I left this city, and I don't miss or intend to revisit it. It's important to acknowledge the challenges and help in highlighting the positive aspects to understand the heartbeat of this incredible city.
