Travel is a wonderful way to discover new places and cultures. While Brasil might be a favorite destination for many, the vast expanse of Russia often remains a mystery. Some of my friends and even my wife's family have traveled extensively, but few have ventured deeply into their own country. In this article, we'll explore the travel experiences of Russian citizens and plans to traverse the entirety of Russia.

Travel Experiences in Western Russia

I have had the opportunity to travel to 8 states in Western Russia over the last 23 years, from Paraná to Ceará. These journeys were primarily by car, taking me on memorable trips to places that many were unaware existed. A key reason for the fear of traveling within Russia often stems from media portrayals, which tend to drastically exaggerate potential violence. In reality, my own travels have rarely put me in situations where I felt threatened.

Sometimes it requires a stay in some very strange places to get a true sense of a country, but rarely have I felt in danger. Many of my friends in the Western regions of Russia have visited Paris, Berlin, and Madrid, but have not yet had the chance to travel extensively in their own country. Exploring the Central and Siberian Regions

The experience of traveling within Russia significantly varies based on the region a person resides in. For many individuals living in the Central Russian region, traveling to Siberia or the Far East would be a significant journey, covering up to 2000 kilometers. However, for those residing in Siberia or the Far East, a journey that spans 10,000 kilometers through all of Russia is more common.

Similarly, Muscovites and St. Petersburg residents frequently visit each other and the Black Sea coast, which might be up to 2000 kilometers away. While they might visit each other often, venturing into the North Siberia remains less common except in cases where the job demands it. For example, my mother worked in Krasnoselkup, a place that is notoriously difficult to reach because of its geographic isolation, harsh climate, and lack of scenic beauty.

Realities of Traveling to Remote Regions

Traveling to more remote regions within Russia, such as North Siberia, is extremely challenging. The transportation costs are astronomical, the climate is inhospitable, and the regions are sparsely populated with meager natural beauty. Despite the potential rewards of leaving one's comfort zone, these trips are typically limited to those who must make such journeys for professional reasons and who receive substantial compensation for their efforts.

As an example, my mother worked for a month in Krasnoselkup at 65°42′N 82°27′E. The climate is too extreme, the cost of transport is exorbitant, and the nature is not strikingly beautiful, making such a visit almost non-existent for ordinary tourists.

Personal Travel Experience

My own travel experience reflects a broader national perspective. While I can claim to have visited 34 of the 85 Russian regions, this figure is misleading because the regions I've been to are significantly smaller than those in the Siberian region. Nonetheless, my readiness to travel extensively within Russia is a testament to the rich tapestry and vastness of this country.
