A Homely Havens: Coming Home to Dheeksha Samudhram
Till my 12th grade, I called the small village of Dheeksha Samudhram my home. Nestled in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, Dheeksha Samudhram was a quaint little village that was my native place. In this article, I will share some of the memorable experiences and learnings from my days living in this beautiful, yet simple village.
A Life of Simplicity
Life in Dheeksha Samudhram was so unassuming. There was a sense of security that you could easily navigate the village, even at night, because everyone knew everyone else. You wouldn't worry about going outside alone in the dead of night because in every street, there would be someone you knew—maybe a relative or a family friend who would ensure your safety.
The Serenity and Nature
While you might miss the hustle and bustle of city life, you would find solace in the harmonious sounds of nature. Imagine a world where the chirping of birds, the peacocks playing in the garden, and the gentle breeze from the fully grown agricultural land and small stream provided a serene backdrop reminiscent of a tranquil paradise.
In my village, there was a farming plot behind our house, and we even had some beautiful random spots. The old stone tools used for grinding grains were a part of our everyday life, and the batter made using these tools would give my dish a special taste that I have yet to experience anywhere else. The small tanks that stored water during the summer were an essential part of our day-to-day life before the advent of modern water tanks.
Creating Lasting Memories
One of the most vivid memories from my village life is the early morning rangolis during the Margazhi masam, one of the Tamil months. As the sun began to rise, we would draw intricate designs on the ground using flower petals, creating a moment of beauty and joy. Alas, many of these cherished photos were lost in the shuffle when I changed my phone, but I promised myself that I would find and upload more.
Transition to City Life and Connection
Life took a turn when our family moved to Chennai. However, even after this transition, we maintained our deep connection to the village. We would visit our native place at least once every six months, cherishing the essence of our roots and the warmth of home.
Conclusion
From simple, yet serene village life to the bustling city of Chennai, Dheeksha Samudhram will always hold a special place in my heart. These memories, however brief, continue to provide a sense of comfort and nostalgia, reminding me of the simple joys and profound beauty of rural life. As I reflect on those times, I am reminded of the power of home and the enduring bond we share with the places that shaped us.
