Visiting a hot spring can be a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience, offering a holistic retreat for both the body and mind. In this article, we will explore what it feels like to enjoy a hot spring, whether developed or wild.

The first sensation you encounter when visiting a hot spring is often the warmth of the water. Developed hot springs are often maintained at a temperature that won't burn you and may include amenities like bars or outdoor areas, such as in New Zealand, where I visited a small waterfall that felt as warm as a shower. It was an amazing experience known more by locals than tourists, complete with a bar where we could drink cold beer in the hot pool.
However, wild hot springs offer a unique and powerful experience. In Sumatra, I had the privilege of lying in a wild river surrounded by a virgin rainforest. We watched as an Orangutan swung from tree to tree. Sometimes we had to move when the stream of water became too hot or too cold, and we had to be cautious not to scald ourselves in too hot streams. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
