Empire State Building Stairs: Access, Time to Descend, and Tips

The Empire State Building, an iconic symbol of New York City skyline, boasts one of the most impressive observation decks. Visitors often wonder if and how they can leave by the stairs. This article aims to clarify the rules and provide practical information about using the stairs for visitors.

Access to the Stairs

While the stairs are a part of the Building's design, they are primarily reserved for emergency evacuations. This is to ensure that visitors can quickly and safely exit in case of an emergency situation. During normal operating hours, it is not recommended for visitors to use the stairs to descend from the observation deck as it could pose a safety hazard.

There are, however, some exceptions to this rule. During an emergency, such as a power outage or another situation that leaves elevators inoperable, the Empire State Building staff may allow visitors to use the stairs for evacuation. Additionally, those participating in the annual Empire State Building Run-Up are granted permission to use the stairs for their event.

Time to Descend

The journey down the 1576 stairs from the 86th floor observation deck can take approximately 15 minutes under normal conditions. This is based on a steady walking pace and is assuming the stairwell is not overcrowded. However, it’s worth noting that in real-life scenarios, the time can vary significantly. A timed timer on a stair stepper device estimates that it takes around 15 minutes to go from the 86th floor to the ground floor.

Interestingly, the Empire State Building hosts an annual stair-climbing race called the Empire State Building Run-Up, where the fastest time has been recorded in around 10 minutes. For the average person, the race might take closer to an hour. Although it is physically demanding, a stair stepper simulation suggests that it would take a similar amount of time to walk down the stairs safely.

Safety Tips for Walking Down the Stairs

Given the steepness and high number of stairs in the Empire State Building, taking a few precautions can significantly enhance safety.

Use the Handrail: Always use the handrail to maintain balance and prevent slips or falls.

Be Mindful of Steps: Pay close attention to each step to avoid tripping or slipping.

Take Breaks: If you feel fatigued, take breaks to catch your breath and regain your strength.

Stay Alert: Be aware of other people using the stairs and maintain a clear path.

Follow Instructions: In case of an emergency, follow the instructions provided by the building staff.

By adhering to these guidelines, visitors can enjoy a safe and memorable journey down the iconic stairs of the Empire State Building.
