Climbing Mt. Fuji in November: Is It Possible and Safe?

The climbing season at Mt. Fuji typically ends much before November, but a few adventurous climbers have attempted to scale the mountain during the colder months. While it is possible, success is highly unlikely, and the risks are significant.

The Risks of Climbing Mt. Fuji in November

Historically, the mountain has claimed lives during the off-season. In November, the weather conditions can be extreme, with temperatures dropping below 0°F and strong wind gusts over 60 mph. These adverse conditions make the climb perilous, even for experienced climbers. Additionally, the mountain acts like a weather magnet, attracting fierce storms and unpredictable weather patterns.

Taking on the Challenge: Nastier Conditions in November

While climbing during the main season (July and August) still poses challenges, the mountain is relatively more forgiving during these months, with huts and services along the way providing a sense of comfort and safety. However, the conditions in November and early winter are considerably more treacherous.

The surface can become a solid sheet of ice, making it extremely difficult to maintain traction even with crampons and ice axes. Climbers can find themselves sliding and struggling to make progress on a hazardous path. December starts even later, with the first instances of snow in November turning into a dangerous ice crust by mid-month.

Signage and Safety Measures

During the off-season, signage at the trailheads clearly indicates that the mountain is closed, and climbers are on their own if they proceed. The local prefecture police strongly recommend that climbers leave an emergency form with them, which states that the Fujifyoshida City Hall and the Tourist Information Center take no responsibility for any troubles or injuries sustained while climbing Mt. Fuji.

Is It Worth It?

While it is possible to climb Mt. Fuji in November, the potential for significant danger and the lack of necessary infrastructure or support make it a highly risky endeavor. Climbers should carefully consider the weather conditions, their own physical fitness, and the potential hazards before making the attempt. If you do decide to climb during this period, it is crucial to have adequate preparation, weather forecasts, and emergency equipment.

Remember, safety should always be the top priority when tackling one of the world's most challenging mountains. Climbing Mt. Fuji in November is possible but far from advisable if you want a safe and successful climb.
