I grew up in San Antonio and still call it home. I love my city, but it's changing. Like the rest of Texas, the area is witnessing impressive growth. However, San Antonio is facing a different challenge: water scarcity. The Edwards Aquifer, which used to provide for the city's needs, is running low. SAWS (San Antonio Water System) is now pumping water from hundreds of miles away, and we're currently in Phase II water restrictions. While the aquifer is struggling, traffic in San Antonio has worsened. It's now more congested than ever, with construction and development constantly altering the landscape. These factors suggest that San Antonio might not be the ideal choice for long-term relocation.

Dallas and Houston: More Compact Options

My recommendation leans more towards Dallas and Houston. Both cities offer less extreme water and traffic issues. With their well-established infrastructure and diverse industries, they present a more stable environment for relocation.

Dallas

Dallas, particularly the broader Dallas Fort Worth 'metroplex', is renowned for its robust IT sector, often referred to as Silicon Prairie. This includes companies like Bell's headquarters and other firms with significant operations here. Additionally, Dallas has a strong financial and healthcare sector, making it a hub for professionals in these fields.

Houston: The Energy Capital of the World

Houston takes the title of 'energy capital of the world'. Home to 44 of the top 113 oil and gas firms in the US and an extensive network of 4,600 energy-related companies, Houston is also a crucial port city with the largest commercial port in the country by tonnage. Beyond energy, it excels in the medical field, hosting the world's largest medical center with 21 hospitals and eight academic and research institutions. Purely on a recreational front, Houston is famous for its world champion baseball team, the Astros, and the massive Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
